Zeeland East 2019/Western Michigan OLB Commit Boone Bonnema is no stranger to the big stage. In fact he’s been on the big stage since August 2015 when at the time the 14 year old freshman got the call up to play Varsity along with now Michigan State Commit and fellow Zeeland East 2019 graduate Adam Berghorst.
“I moved from the Dallas, Texas area and came here and Berg (Adam) and his family were some of the first people to welcome us here and make it feel like home which makes it so special for me. He’s one of my best friends and I love competing with him by my side.”
The two Zeeland standouts have had plenty of success on the football field leading Zeeland East to an undefeated regular season a year ago.
“This year we want to go as far as possible in our last run in High School. My goal is to win states and we have the talent to do it as long as we work hard.”
Bonnema was very active on the recruiting trail as he was rated a 3 Star with a 0.8265 composite which is good enough for 33rd best in a very good class in Michigan according to 247sports.com. Bonnema ended his recruitment in February becoming Western Michigan’s first commitment in the 2019 class.
“I had a check-list and Western checked everything off for me. They’re close to home so I can see my family often, they have a great business school which is what I want to go into there and the coaches are great and believe in me not only as a player but a person.”
Bonnema chose Western over offers from several MAC schools including Central Michigan, Toledo, and Northern Illinois.
